Community Champion Awards 2024 - Haleema Khan

Meet one of two winners of the Young Champion category at the 2024 Provost Community Champion Awards!

Haleema Khan is part of a small team that run the Bishy Bulletin – Bishopbriggs Academy’s school magazine. With an interest in investigative journalism, Haleema has written on topics such as child labour in the production of chocolate and homelessness in Scotland as well as light-hearted pieces.

Primary 7 pupils introduced to journalism

She works closely with Primary 7 pupils to introduce them to journalism and get them involved in the magazine and meets with local care home residents to share the Bishy Bulletin with them. The Bulletin has given Haleema the opportunity to give back to the community and she has grabbed it with both hands, winning the ‘First News’ Young Reporter of the Year, a national competition which saw her reporting and presenting on Sky News’ flagship show for young people ‘FYI.’

Haleema was presented her award by Provost Gillian Renwick and Depute Provost Colette McDiarmid.

As she was presented with her Award Haleema said,

It was a great honour to receive this Young Champion Award

Important to be inclusive and to connect with our communities

I think it is so important to be inclusive and to connect with our communities and support each other. That’s what our Bishy Bulletin does for our school community and I’m always happy to support people whenever I can.”

Congratulations to our Young Champion, Haleema!
