Love on the menu for this Diamond Couple

When Isobel and Tommy were perusing the menu in the Peel Cafe in Kirkintilloch one day in the early 1960s, little did they know that their lives were about to change forever.

A chance meeting in a café that is long gone was just the start of a love story that lasted through the decades. The young couple were married on 1 February 1964 at St Ninian’s Church in Kirkintilloch and have just celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in the town.

Provost Gillian Renwick surprised the couple with a visit to their home to mark the special milestone and presented them with flowers on behalf of the people of East Dunbartonshire.

Mini wedding in the Miners club

Mr and Mrs Furay were later joined by their two children, two grandchildren, extended family and friends for a 'mini wedding' in the Miners' Club. A hundred guests enjoyed a meal and toasted the happy couple before dancing the night away with live entertainment.

Both retired fairly early in life and spent many happy years travelling and shopping together with Isobel turning her hand to making soft furnishings while Tommy enjoys his sports.

Congratulations to Isobel and Tommy on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary!
