Flying the flag for troops and veterans on Armed Forces Day
East Dunbartonshire Council is honouring troops and veterans this Armed Forces Day (Saturday 29 June 2024) at its Marina HQ in Kirkintilloch.
A special Armed Forces Day flag was raised by Depute Provost Colette McDiarmid and Vice Lord-Lieutenant Jim Rogers alongside the Council’s Veterans’ Champion, Councillor Stewart MacDonald, and local veteran Robert Campbell MBE, who is a retired Royal Highland Fusilier.
The short ceremony took place ahead of the day itself with a special Union Flag flying throughout the weekend in support of the commemorative event.
Depute Provost Colette McDiarmid said,
Important we mark this special day
“It is important that we mark this very special day and it is my privilege to once again be a part of Armed Forces Day in East Dunbartonshire – a now well-established Council tradition. The service and sacrifice of our military personnel must never be forgotten and I am proud to be joining with others across the UK to celebrate and commemorate.”
Vice Lord-Lieutenant Jim Rogers added,
2017, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant
“I believe that the United Kingdom has the finest Armed Forces in the world – including our Reservists, Cadets and Volunteers – representing the very best that this country stands for. This is the day when the rest of us can show our patriotic support for their outstanding contribution to this country.”
In 2017, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant with the Ministry of Defence – a promise that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
