There were 100 candles on George Lightbody’s cake at his recent special birthday celebrations when Provost Renwick dropped by with flowers.

Now widowed, George was with wife Agnes for 70 years and they share three daughters, a son, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

An older gentleman is standing in the middle with a walking aid and to his right is woman in a blue dress, wearing chains of office and holding a basket of beautiful flowers.

In his younger days, he was a runner and badminton player/coach and a dedicated member of the Boys Brigade. He puts his longevity down to his ‘good countryside genes’ and his ten fruit and veg a day habit.

Provost Renwick said, “Although he misses Agnes every day he has such a zest for life and is so positive. He is a true inspiration to so many people.

“Lots of the local church congregation joined his family to celebrate his birthday with him so he was surrounded with love and friendship on his special day. I was honoured to be part of that.”
