During Local History Month, Provost Renwick had the honour of officially opening Milngavie Heritage Centre Group’s Spring exhibition in Milngavie Library.

Entitled, ‘The Changing Face of Milngavie: 1960 - 1980’ the exhibition looks at the dramatic transformation of the physical landscape of the town centre and surrounding area over the 1960s and 70s.

These changes include the pedestrianisation of the town centre, a new bypass and the electrification of the Milngavie railway line. During that time many new public buildings like the Lillie Art Gallery and the old Douglas Academy were built as well as new housing.

Provost Renwick said, “This exhibition makes you stop and think at just how the pace of change is quickening in this era of ever-present and developing technology. It makes you ponder too, what a future exhibition on this theme might look like a few decades from now.

“Some things thankfully remain constant – the hard work and commitment of the Milngavie Heritage Centre Group for one. The work they do to preserve and commemorate the local heritage of Milngavie is very much appreciated and the town is all the richer for the wealth of knowledge and local experience they share through their exhibitions and wider work.”
