Technical Notes 2021, Issue 17 - International Workers Memorial Day 2021
Section
1. International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) is commemorated each year on 28 April to remember those who have lost their lives at work. For a number of years, the Council has held a commemoration event on the day at the Cadder Pit Disaster memorial cairn in Bishopbriggs, with Trades Union and Community Planning Partnership colleagues.
2. Although a commemoration event will not be possible again this year, we will still be recognising this day, and remembering those who have lost their lives or fallen ill through work, especially frontline workers as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
3. Each year the International Trades Union Congress decides on a theme for Workers’ Memorial Day, and the theme for 2021 is that Health and Safety is a fundamental workers’ right. We have a long established Partnership at Work relationship with our Trade Unions in East Dunbartonshire, and this past year more than ever, health and safety and employee wellbeing considerations have been an important aspect of our approach to ensuring our employees are safe and supported in their roles during the pandemic.
4. The flags at the Council Southbank Marina HQ will be half-masted on Wednesday 28 April in commemoration of IWMD 2021 and all Council employees will be invited to participate in the UK wide minute of silence at 11 am.
5. A media release and social media posts will be issued to inform the East Dunbartonshire community of the Council’s approach
