Technical Notes 2022, Issue 147 - General Capital Grant 2022-23 for Scottish Government Nature Restoration Fund

- The purpose of this Technical Note is to update Elected Members regarding additional funding received via Scottish Government General Capital Grant 2022-23 allocation.
- Please note that all additional capital funding must be spent by the end of the 2022/23 financial year.
- We can advise that the Council received an allocation of £132,000 from the Nature Restoration Fund.
- The Council’s Streetscene Technical Support Team has identified appropriate projects that can be procured, undertaken and completed by end of 2023. A basic summary of the location and nature of the works are as follows:-
- Bearsden Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within the urban area, and to strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Bishopbriggs Park Biodiversity Tree Planting; the planting of young trees within the park will provide increased habitat richness, and provide a base woodland stock to complement the mature, veteran trees within the park.
- Cairnhill Woods Woodland Enhancement Works Phase Two; Works will represent a continuation from last year’s enhancement project.
- Harestanes Meadow Creation; the work will provide a pollinator area within the wide undulating band of amenity grass adjacent to the footpath and residential area.
- High Park, Lennoxtown; works will be carried out to improve management of an area of Lowland Heath within High Park, Lennoxtown. Lowland Heath is a UK Priority habitat and as such requires positive management to be enhanced and protected.
- Lennoxtown Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within an urban area and to strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Lenzie Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within an urban area and strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Lenzie Moss Water Vole Habitat Restoration; To increase the viable habitat available for fossorial Water Vole at Lenzie Moss through the creation of small bunds and pools.
- Milngavie Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within an urban area and strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Milton of Campsie Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within an urban area and strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Redhills Woodland; To enhance an existing woodland for biodiversity through the planting of honeysuckle and bramble. In addition, the planting of a number of native apple trees to provide autumn/ winter feeding for a variety of wildlife.
- Skunk Cabbage eradication - various locations; To treat and prevent further establishment of this invasive non-native species, and to enable growth of native ground flora.
- Twechar Biodiversity Friendly Bulb Planting; To provide biodiversity friendly spring bulb planting to assist pollinator species. In addition, this project will provide increased visual amenity to the local area.
- Twechar Biodiversity Street Tree Planting; To create enhanced tree corridors within an urban area and strengthen the green network link to the peri-urban area;
- Yellow Rattle Biodiversity Improvement Project; To increase the biodiversity connectivity through two of East Dunbartonshire Council’s main arterial routes through the provision of increased nectar sources and food plants for pollinating species.
- Purchasing of equipment to cut and lift wildflower areas.
- Feasibility study to identify appropriate tree and meadow planting sites within East Dunbartonshire and their equivalent carbon capture rates.
