Technical Notes 2023, Issue 132 - Re-routing of John Muir Way, near existing weir at Glazert Water, Lennoxtown, due to riverbank erosion
Section
1. The purpose of the Technical Note is to provide Members with an update on the 2023/24 Project to reroute a section of the John Muir Way near existing weir at Glazert Water, Lennoxtown, due to riverbank erosion.
2. The Technical Note highlights the work associated with re-routing of the path known as the John Muir Way is being undertaken as a result of erosion to the left back of the Glazert Water upstream of the existing weir in Lennoxtown.
3. The erosion of this river has caused the banking to slip into the river and now is putting the path and its users at risk. This area has been made safe with barrier fencing for now. However, this section of path is currently still being used.
4. An operational decision by service officers and SEPA was to relocate the path further inland to ensure safety of its users. This was decided as the river is looking to move through natural processes and this bank will always be at risk of erosion.
5. The Service have included for remedial works of this eroded bank and existing weir in our Glazert River Restoration (GRR) Project which is currently at detail design stage only.
6. We therefore advise that the relocating path works are to commence by our appointed Contractor JML Contracts Ltd on the 22nd August 23 and last for two weeks
7. Users will still be able to use the old path while new path is being constructed. After completion the old path will be made safe, and users encouraged to use this new route and path.
8. Plan of rerouted path highlighted in red
