Section

His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023, and the introduction of an additional bank holiday on the following Monday will result in a three-day “Coronation Weekend”.

Monday 8 May 2023 will be a national bank holiday to mark the Coronation and this is intended to allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to celebrate the Coronation.

In light of the above, and following engagement with the trade unions, the Chief Executive has liaised with political group leaders and now intends to exercise his delegated authority to designate Monday 8 May as an additional special public holiday for the Council.

Service Arrangements on Monday 8 May

  1. For the Council this means that Monday 8 May 2023 will be an additional special public holiday and Council services and facilities will be closed, including schools, and early years’ facilities.  The Council website will be updated to confirm this information.

  2. The exception will be our frontline services, including homecare, the Emergency Response Centre and emergency and standby services, where the usual arrangements for a public holiday will be in place. This means that anyone required to work on that day will receive enhanced rates in accordance with their normal contractual conditions.  In addition, those who work flexibly (whether in relation to the number of hours worked or work pattern) will also be credited with the appropriate leave.

  3. Operational arrangements for Waste and recycling collection services and Mavis Valley Household Recycling Centre are currently being assessed. It is intended that services will operate as normal on Monday 8 May, but this will be subject to sufficient employees volunteering to work on that day.  Final operational arrangements will be communicated as soon as possible.

  4. All EDLC Trust facilities (leisure and sports facilities, libraries, and culture venues) will also be closed on Monday 8 May, consistent with the Council’s approach.

  5. A letter to parents and carers will be issued through schools to confirm the public holiday and school closure arrangements.

  6. An additional payment will be paid to all those in receipt of free school meals (apart from universal provision) for Monday 8 May.

  7. Charges for Early Years facilities will be recalculated as a result of this additional day of closure and parents and carers will be advised.

  8. All lets in Council and Trust facilities will be cancelled on Monday 8 May as a result and customers will be advised.

  9. The Council website will be updated including a page to summarise the service changes on Monday 8 May and the school holiday pages will also be updated to reflect these arrangements.  Arrangements will also be shared across the Council’s social media channels.
