Section

  1. The UCI Cycling Championships take place in Glasgow and across Scotland from 3-13 August 2023. The event brings together thirteen cycling championships including the road races.
     
  2. There are three road races during the Championships that start in either Edinburgh or Balloch in West Dunbartonshire and end in Glasgow City Centre. They transit through a number of local authority areas, including East Dunbartonshire.
     
  3. Unlike previous Time Trial cycling events in East Dunbartonshire, there will not be prolonged road closures for the duration of the cycling road races. Instead there will be rolling road closures in each local authority area from a few minutes before the front riders are due in the locality until just after the final riders have cleared the area. Race planners anticipate the transition through East Dunbartonshire to take between 30-40 minutes. The details of these races are as follows:
     
  4. Men’s Elite Road Race

Time: 09.30, Sunday 6 August

Location: Edinburgh to Glasgow

Distance: 271.1km

Total elevation: 3,570 metres

Race from Edinburgh to Glasgow through Fife, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Stirling and East Dunbartonshire.

Timescales: Race start time is 09:30. The riders are anticipated to pass through East Dunbartonshire between 11:45 and 12:12 on the day.

  1. Men’s U23 Road Race

Time: 12.00, 12 August 2023

Location: Loch Lomond to Glasgow

Distance: 168.4km

Elevation: 2436 metres

Route starting in Balloch in West Dunbartonshire and travelling through Stirlingshire and East Dunbartonshire to finish in Glasgow.

Timescales: Race start time is 12:00. The riders are anticipated to pass through East Dunbartonshire between 12.56 and 13:23 on the day.

  1. Women’s Elite Road Race

Time: 12.00, Sunday 13 August

Location: Loch Lomond to Glasgow

Distance: 154.1km

Total elevation: 2229 metres

Route starting in Balloch in West Dunbartonshire and travelling through Stirlingshire and East Dunbartonshire to finish in Glasgow.

Timescales: Race start time is 12:00. The riders are anticipated to pass through East Dunbartonshire between 12:58 and 13:26 on the day.

  1. The Council’s Roads & Environment Service are represented at the Championships Planning meetings and an internal Council working group has been established to co-ordinate Council participation in the events.
     
  2. The routes are being formally announced today (Tuesday, 16 May) and a Cycling Championships page has been published on the Council website so that the information on the dates, routes and timescales is available to East Dunbartonshire communities.
     
  3. The UCI Cycling Championships project team are co-ordinating local information sessions in each local authority area and are preparing responses to a series of Frequently Asked Questions. This additional information will be made available on the Council’s website as soon as it is available and will be promoted locally.
