  1. The Traffic-Free Schools pilot project was approved at Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee on 25 May 2023 (report ref: PNCA/047/23/IH). The purpose of this technical note is to provide Elected Members with an update on a targeted consultation event planned for June 2023, in preparation for the implementation of the Traffic-Free Schools pilot project.
  2. Action 18(a) within the Parking Management Plan (PMP) is to “Pilot a programme of traffic-free schools at appropriate school locations”. Traffic-free schools is an initiative where small sections of road immediately outside the entrance to schools, are closed for a short period of time at the start and end of the school day.
  3. As part of our ongoing commitment to the PMP delivery plan the Council is piloting Traffic-Free Schools at four primary schools from August 2023, for full details please see Report PNCA/047/23/IH.
  4. A robust monitoring plan is in place to evaluate the conditions outside the schools at present and then after the pilot is in operation.
  5. Part of the monitoring plan is to conduct a survey to establish the baseline with parents/carers and residents alike. The survey will be issued to parents/carers of the schools and residents in the immediate area for a two-week period (5th – 16th June).
  6. The survey will be available online on the Council’s website and will be available in paper version upon request.
  7. Following completion of the consultation process, officers will analyse the feedback received and will be used when monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the project.
  8. The findings of the pilot and the recommendations going forward will be reported to a future meeting of Committee on completion.
