New Bishopbriggs cemetery
Residents are being given a chance to find out about proposals to build a new cemetery in Bishopbriggs at a drop-in event being held in April.
The existing Cadder Cemetery is approaching the end of its operational lifespan, requiring a replacement. Based on the current burial rate, a new cemetery will be required to replace it by 2030.
The Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 states that each local authority must provide at least one burial ground within the area of the local authority. East Dunbartonshire Council therefore has a statutory obligation to provide one or more burial grounds.
The Council is proposing to develop an area of land to the south of Kirkintilloch Road (A803) bordered on its western edge by Cole Road. The proposed site, which is situated approximately 1km from the existing Cadder Cemetery on Crosshill Road, was allocated for Cemetery use in the Local Development Plan.
It is roughly 14.3 hectares in size and is largely arable farmland with a Glacial Meltwater Channel to the south.
The Meltwater Channel is a geological feature carved out by meltwater from a retreating glacier. Our proposals would see it protected with no area of it developed.
The proposal is for the development of a cemetery with a mixture of burial types, soft and hard landscaping, new access, vehicle / cycle parking, biodiversity enhancements and associated development.
A drop-in event, organised by the Council’s Cemeteries Team, will give residents an opportunity to view the initial proposals, find out more and give their feedback. The event details are:
Date: Thursday 24 April 2025
Time: 3-7.30pm
Venue: Bishopbriggs Library and Community Hub, 170 Kirkintilloch Road, Bishopbriggs, G64 2LX
Experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide further details on the plans and drawings that are being proposed to help the Council deliver additional cemetery space for East Dunbartonshire.
If you are unable to attend the drop-in event then you are still able to take part in the consultation. Please see the documents section for an overview of what is presently proposed for the site. Once you have looked over the plans, please complete a short survey so that our design team can consider your comments in more detail.
New Cemetery Survey
The survey will be available from Wednesday 16 April until Thursday 1 May 2025.
A second drop-in event will take place on Thursday 29 May from 3-7.30pm at Bishopbriggs Library and Community Hub, where feedback will be provided on the views gathered during this first event. A report will then be prepared, which will be submitted in support of the planning application.
Please note that comments made at this stage are not formal representations to the planning authority. Once a planning application is submitted a further opportunity to make representations to the planning authority on any development proposals will be made available.
