On International Workers’ Memorial Day (28 April 2023), East Dunbartonshire Council will once again hold a memorial event with partners and invite all its employees to join in a minute’s silence.

International Workers’ Memorial Day is now an established part of the Council’s calendar when elected members and employees join people across the world to remember those who have lost their lives at work, or from work-related injury or illness.

As always, as part of the Council’s commemorations, the flags at Council HQ in Kirkintilloch will fly at half-mast and all employees who are able are encouraged to be part of a one-minute silence at noon.

Council Leader Gordan Low and Chief Executive Gerry Cornes will join Councillors, representatives from the Trades Unions and the Community Planning Partnership for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cadder Pit Memorial Cairn* at Bishopbriggs Library & Community Hub at 2pm.

It will be an honour to lay a wreath at our commemoration ceremony on Friday to mark this special day which is recognised globally. It is important to take a moment to remember and reflect upon the lives lost and to show our commitment to continue to provide a safe working environment for all our employees.
Councillor Gordon Low

* The cairn was erected in 2013 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cadder Pit Disaster of 1913 when 22 miners lost their lives.
