The life and work of one of the UK’s most renowned sculptors, the late Dennis Westwood, is to be celebrated at a new exhibition at Milngavie’s Lille Art Gallery.
The show, which launches on Saturday 8 July, includes elegant bronzes and previously unseen working drawings which showcase his wonderful draughtsmanship.
Although trained in the figurative tradition, Westwood was best known for his abstract bronzes which have an extraordinary tactile and sensual nature. His technical process of grinding, polishing and patination created the exquisite finishes on his sculptures.
Jim Neill, Chair of East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust, which operates the Lille Art Gallery, said, "We're delighted to be hosting this fantastic exhibition, in association with Gerber Fine Art.
“Dennis Westwood’s work was first exhibited in the Young Contemporaries in London back in 1954. In the following decades he had many solo shows in the UK and the US and his works also appeared in mixed exhibitions at venues including the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy.
Born in Essex in 1928, he trained at Wimbledon School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, London under Frank Dobson and John Skeaping. A teacher of sculpture for many years, he was a visiting professor at Indiana University and subsequently head of sculpture at Carlisle College of Art and Stoke on Trent College of Art.
Dennis Westwood 1928-2021: a retrospective exhibition of his bronzes and previously unseen drawings, in association with Gerber Fine Art, is at the Lillie Art Gallery from Sat 8 July until Thurs 17 August.
