A series of bird box building workshops which took place during the summer holidays have been hailed a great success.

Around 70 bird boxes were built by volunteers, kids and adults alike, who came along to the drop-in sessions which were organised by the Council’s Streetscene Technical Support.

Supported by the Countryside Rangers, the workshops were designed to support local biodiversity and increase awareness as well as providing a fun activity for children during the school holidays.

Our birdbox building workshops are hugely popular and this summer our Streetscene team was able increase the number of events across East Dunbartonshire.
Councillor Paul Ferretti, Convener of the PNCA committee

"In addition to producing homes for the local bird population, these fun sessions help to engage and enthuse our young people with native wildlife and their local environment. The workshops are just one of the ways that our Council is demonstrating our commitment to enhancing biodiversity across East Dunbartonshire.”

Around 200 people attended the events which took place at spots including Cairnhill Wood – Bearsden, Merkland Local Nature Reserve and Luggie Park, Kirkintilloch,

Meadowburn Park – Bishopbriggs and Kilmardinny Loch Local Nature Reserve, Bearsden.

Funded by the Scottish Government Nature Restoration Fund works, the bird boxes created during the sessions provide much-needed homes for smaller birds. In younger woodlands, there are fewer old trees with natural holes and fissures for these small birds to nest in. These boxes will provide nesting sites which will help support local bird populations. The boxes will be installed over the winter months in the locations where the workshops were held.
