Well-known local buildings in East Dunbartonshire will be throwing open their doors to allow the public to explore as part as this year’s Doors Open Days.

The annual event, which this year takes place on Saturday 6 September and Sunday 7 September, allows free access to lots of venues as well as sites of historic, cultural, archaeological and community interest, some of which are not usually open to the public and others which offer access to unique areas.

Step back in time at Caldwell Halls in Torrance. Once the local school, the two-storey building at the heart of the village dates back to 1813. While lessons were held on the ground floor the upper level served as the home of the schoolmaster. Various displays will allow attendees to explore the history of school life over the years and try out traditional children’s games.

If you have ever wanted to go backstage at a theatre, now is your chance. Smell the grease paint, marvel at the costumes and speak to the cast at Kirkintilloch’s very own theatre, The Turret. Kirkintilloch’s Eastside is home to the Kirkintilloch Players and backdrop to countless award-winning productions. Members of the theatre group, which celebrated its centenary in 2023, will be on hand to share the history and inner workings of this much-loved venue.

Alternatively, curious visitors can go behind the scenes at the Fort theatre in Bishopbriggs. Spend an hour or two, treading the boards, enjoying refreshments in the bar and watching the children’s puppet show which will be playing throughout the day on Sunday 7 September.

Doors Open Day is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar and I am delighted to see so many much-loved venues in East Dunbartonshire taking part this year. From churches and theatres to libraries and other buildings of note, there is plenty to explore.
Jim Gibbons, Chair of EDLC Trust

He continued, “As well as being able to see the wonderful architecture and design of the venues, Doors Open Day is about learning more about communities and the social history of the area. Many buildings will be sharing their stories through temporary exhibitions and heritage talks and I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to go along and learn more about our rich social and cultural history.

East Dunbartonshire Doors Open day is part of a family of Doors Open Days events taking place across Scotland throughout September. It is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and EDLC Trust coordinates the East Dunbartonshire programme. The event could not be possible without the local volunteer support of participating groups, venues and the East Dunbartonshire Heritage and History Forum.

It is Scotland’s largest, free festival that celebrates places and stories, new and old and is supported by Historic Environment Scotland. You can find the full programme on the EDLC website East Dunbartonshire Doors Open Days 2025 | EDLC
