Earlier this month, during the Scottish Book Trust’s first ever Reading Schools Week, more than 120 pupils and staff from across East Dunbartonshire attended a Reading Schools* Showcase event.
Held in Douglas Academy in Milngavie, the book lovers’ gathering was a celebration of reading and creative writing for the visitors from primary and secondary schools, and Woodland View School.
Local authors Stuart Reid, Lindsay Littleton and Victoria Williamson attended the event, giving pupils and staff an opportunity to hear first-hand about their journeys as writers. The authors generously shared their experiences, inspirations, challenges and creative processes, offering an authentic insight into the world of storytelling and publishing.
A representative from the EDLC Trust’s Library Service also came along to provide information on the services and activities available to children and young people in local libraries.
Councillor Lynda Williamson, Convener of the Council’s Education Committee, said, “We have 38 Reading Schools in East Dunbartonshire, with eight having achieved Gold status.
Being part of a Reading School means sharing a love of reading and creating an environment where reading is encouraged and valued.
“This event was an opportunity for everyone to discuss what they are doing and share best practice. It created a vibrant, inclusive space that celebrated books, creativity and the joy of reading for pleasure across whole school communities. I hope that it has motivated them to continue exploring books, fostering a lifelong love of reading.”
During the event, everyone enjoyed participating in a short book themed quiz and hearing from pupils and staff from Balmuildy Primary School and Turnbull High School who spoke about their journeys within the Scottish Book Trust Reading Schools programme.
All pupils had the opportunity to choose a free book to take away, courtesy of the Scottish Book Trust.
